Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are actually a set of molars that appear for most people in early adulthood.  Unfortunately, they oftentimes grow in misaligned and need to be extracted.  This inconsistent positioning can cause damage to nearby teeth and require removal before this happens.

On some occasions, wisdom teeth become impacted, which means they only partially break through the gum, but not entirely.  This is a hazard because the immature tooth can easily give way to bacteria which can then form into a full-fledged infection.  Other risks with impacted wisdom teeth include higher vulnerability to tooth decay and gum disease.

Removing these teeth before problems occur is a favorable practice, as extraction becomes more difficult when complications interfere with what would have been a simple removal.  It’s particularly easy to remove wisdom teeth in young people, as the roots haven’t fully developed and aren’t quite as deeply entrenched into the jaw.  During the removal process we apply a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort, and a mild sedative is available upon request of the patient or suggestion of our dental team.  Removing your wisdom teeth may be an important step to maintaining your oral health, and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable the entire process.
